The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has agreed to lead a tour of their Nachusa Grasslands preserve on Saturday, May 14th, 2016, starting at 10 am.

While the Nachusa Grasslands is composed primarily of prairieland, it also contains some forested areas.  This tour will concentrate on the management practices used by TNC to maintain native species and provide high-quality wildlife habitat within these forested areas.  TNC will have just completed their spring burn season and attendees will be able to see the effects of fire on these habitats.

Directions: From Elizabeth, Illinois, take US Rte 20 east to Rte 26  at Freeport.  Drive south on Rte 26 through Freeport, Forreston, and Polo to Dixon.  Just north of Dixon, after crossing over the Rock River, turn left (east) on Rte 2 and drive 2.5 miles before angling to the right onto Lost Nation Road when Rte 2 turns north.  Drive about 1 mile on Lost Nation Road.  When Lost Nation Road turns north, turn left onto Naylor Road and drive an additional 3 miles before turning left onto Lowden Road.  Drive one mile north on Lowden Road to the Nachusa Grasslands entrance on left.

Registration:  While this event is free and open to the public, please register so that the TNC guides have a better idea of the size of the crowd.  Thank you.
